Computational Core

Five years of successful accomplishment from the University of Pittsburgh MIDAS Center of Excellence's Computational Core yielded the research project, "Modeling and Forecasting" in 2015. Models of epidemics often require substantial computational resources and computational advances are revolutionizing the field of infectious disease modelling. While most historical modeling is restricted to analysis of mathematically tractable (and simplified) deterministic models, modern high performance computer (HPC) systems making use of parallel computing architectures greatly extend limits on complexity. At the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), large-scale MIDAS models have been efficiently run thousands of times on HPCs, allowing simple exploratory modeling to be scaled up into full-fledged national policy tools. To this end, The University of Pittsburgh MIDAS National Center of Excellence joined with the PSC to establish the MIDAS Computational Core; a team of MIDAS researchers with expertise in modeling, who have the experience to employ a wide range of modeling techniques and who have access to diverse computational platforms through the resources of the PSC. The goal of the Core was to improve the performance of, enhance the visualization of, and provide support for collaborative efforts in computational epidemiology. 

Specific Aims:

1: Improving performance, support and visualization of computational epidemiology

2: Integration of new computational models into agent based model

3: Provide tools for the automated optimization of intervention policies.
